Adam Elliot is an Academy Award® winning independent stop-motion animation writer and director. He has become one of the world’s most celebrated animators with films including Uncle, Cousin, Brother, Harvie Krumpet and Max and Mary.
In 2009, Max and Mary won numerous Australian and international film awards. It was the official selection opening night film for Robert Redford’s 2009 Sundance Film Festival – the first Australian and first animated film to be selected.
In 2003, his half hour film Harvie Krumpet, narrated by Geoffrey Rush, won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, eclipsing the work of the Disney, Pixar and Fox studios. The Annecy International Animation Festival included Harvie Krumpet as one of the top 100 animated films of all time.
A naturally gifted, engaging and entertaining communicator, Adam shares his story: A Dream and Vision, which describes how he became an overnight success after years of hard work. He talks about his years of success without wider recognition, numerous obstacles, rejections, limited funding, long hours and the appalling work conditions he endured to finally produce a global winner!
Adam Elliot’s films are highly personal and detailed explorations of the human spirit. Based on the people around him, his universal stories are personal and unique biographies that deal with themes from the achingly funny to the darkly melancholic. Viewed by people of all ages, his stories have entertained and nourished people in nearly every country on earth. His scripts attract and are voiced by some of the worlds finest actors including, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette, Geoffrey Rush, Eric Bana and Barry Humphries.
Adam writes and directs all of his films. His highly skilled team of animators and model makers spends thousands of painstaking hours bringing his comic and poignant cinematic stories to life using traditional ‘in-camera’ techniques in production. Every prop set and character is a ‘real’ miniature handcrafted object.
Adam has been honoured with many industry distinctions. His films have been viewed by millions of people around the world and have participated in over five hundred film festivals. All have been eligible for Academy Award consideration, and have won over one hundred of industry awards. From six nominations, his films have received five Australian Film Institute Awards – more AFI Awards than any other Australian director.
In total, Adam Elliot’s films have accumulated over $200,000 in prizes. They have been translated, sold and distributed to broadcasters, airlines and theatres around the globe. The DVD of his films has been released in Europe, Asia and America, with sales of over 40,000 copies in Australia alone.
Adam is an ambassador and patron of many organizations and charities and travels to various festivals around the world judging short films and giving forums on the art form. In 1998, Adam was awarded the Medibank Private Arts Award and in 1999 he was named Young Victorian of the Year for his achievements in film making. The following year he was presented with the annual Film Victoria’s Greg Tepper Award for outstanding achievement by an emerging filmmaker. Adam has been recognized as an Australia National Treasure!
