Solving One of the Worlds Biggest Problems.
- Team Building
- Comfort Zone
- Achieving the Impossible
When Clary Castrission was a naive university student, travelling through rural India, he met a small community of people – most of whom worked 16 hours a day in the local quarry. It was there that he made a commitment to the quarry workers to build them a school. That commitment changed his life.
Clary will take you on a journey by sharing his story and lessons from a place you never have thought of: the village. Clary’s story is not about philanthropy. It’s not about charity. This is about tackling the most complicated of problems, a seemingly insurmountable challenge. This is a story of succeeding through passion, persistence and harnessing the power and spirit of hundreds of young Australians who are changing the world.
Clary followed through on his promise to the quarry workers and opened the Banyan School just outside Bangalore 5 years later, in 2010. However, he soon realised his model and strategy in addressing one of the world’s most pressing problems was flawed.
Clary had to turn everything he had learnt about education on its head to make it work in a village. In doing so, he became the founder of the 40K Group and one of the youngest Australians to be honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Clary’s story will grip you as it navigates through a strangely connected pastiche of anecdotes ranging from history to fascinating, shocking and hilarious accounts of contemporary India, held together by seams of his own experience as he goes about fulfilling his mission.
Clary is not the good-natured philanthropist people would think of when you entertain the thought of a young man choosing to go do social impact stuff. He is brutally honest of his shortcomings as 40K acts as his teacher for being an entrepreneur and for life in general.
