Swimming sensation, 4 x Olympian, Cameron McEvoy has had an incredible journey throughout his swimming career, culminating in winning Gold in the 50m Freestyle at the Paris 2024 Olympics, cementing his place as fastest swimmer in the world!
Prior to the 2024 Olympics, Cameron was the first Australian swimmer in history to win all 3 major freestyle titles – the 50m, 100m, and 200m at the Australian Championships, including swimming the fastest time in history in a textile suit, and still holds the Australian records for both the 50m and 100m freestyle.
His story is one of the greatest Australian sporting journeys of all time. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Cameron entered the final as the red-hot favorite in the 100m freestyle, after swimming the fastest time ever in a textile suit at Australian Championships that year. To his many’ s surprise, he finished 7th in the final, and after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (his 3 rd Olympic Games), he was knocked out of the heats in 50m & 100m freestyle, placing his career into doubt. He later took a long break from swimming and considered giving it away, after failing to regain his previous world leading form. He then ‘turned the tables’, by embarking on his self-developed revolutionary training regime, which debunked traditional swimming training principles by spending a fraction of the time in the pool, to focus on strength & resistance training. His ‘experiment’ was then vindicated in 2023, where he became World Champion at age 29, and Olympic Champion at age 30, the oldest Australian swimmer to do so in an individual event.
Dubbed ‘The Professor’ outside of the pool, Cameron is known for his love of science, technology, fashion and other sports. McEvoy studied a Bachelor of Science where he majored in both Physics and Mathematics, which was followed by a summer fellowship at Griffith University’s Centre of Quantum Dynamics where he looked into Nanodiamonds and their atomic properties, under world-renowned physicist Erik Streed.
Cameron embodies all the qualities we seek in our champions– he is humble, articulate, intelligent, and well centered. He has a fascinating perspective on the world and his sport and is an eloquent and sought after speaker brand ambassador. With this new lease on his career, Cameron is enjoying swimming more than ever, and has set his sights on competing in the 2 Olympics Games in Los Angeles 2028 Brisbane 2032, which would be a historic feat!
